Cinematheque in Feb: Big Stars, Big Screen, Tiny Price

UPDATE: March has more Spielberg including Duel, more Indiana Jones, the Jurassic Parks, and A.I.   Also this month, The King’s Speech and the Iranian Oscar Winner, A Separation. Click here for the schedule.

The Cinematheque in Nice has a star-studded line-up of English-language films in February, featuring the late great Elizabeth Taylor, and a retrospective of the films of Steven Spielberg.

In this age of rising ticket prices and shrinking screens, these big films are shown on the screen size they were made for… and best of all, the ticket price is also a throwback to an earlier era:  instead of 10.50€ at the Pathe Cinemas (!) a movie ticket at the Cinematheque will only set you back 1.50 to 2€.

What could be better on a cold winter day than an old fashioned matinee?  Try Elizabeth Taylor with Rock Hudson and James Dean in Giant, with Paul Newman in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, with Marlon Brando in Reflections in a Golden Eye, or with Richard Burton in Cleopatra and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, just to name a few…

If Spielberg is more your cup of tea, wow again to ET, Close Encounters, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom… or cry again to profound tales of human redemption with The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun, Schindler’s List, and Saving Private Ryan.

And if you just want to laugh, one of my personal favorites, Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein (French title: Frankenstein Junior) plays March 2 and 3.

The Cinematheque is located in the Acropolis complex (next to the bowling alley, for more retro fun) and your 1€ yearly membership card also entitles you to reduced ticket prices all year (5.50€ instead of 7.50€) at the eclectic Mercury Cinema at Place Garibaldi.

Thanks for that! What a fun thing to do on these cold days, especially with the kids’ two week vacation coming up. Cheers!
