The 1st of May and every Sunday in May, the Nice May Folklore Festival, Lu Fete des Mai, takes over the Jardins de Cimiez to celebrate the debut of springtime… just as they’ve done every May for hundreds of years.
With free entry, a family atmosphere and celebrating all-things-Niçoise, this centuries-old festival under-the-olive-trees features traditional dancing, costumes, roving musicians, animations and folklore, plus local food (socca, pissaladieres…), traditional games (pétanque and pilou), and lots and lots of picnicking!
As long as you’re up there, why not combine it with a visit to the Matisse Museum, the extraordinary Roman Bath Ruins (Musee de l’Archaeologie), the magnificent Monastery gardens, or the surprising and little-known Franciscan Monk Museum, tucked into the church and with a fascinating exhibit on the Shroud of Turin, which was held in Nice for a time.
With the new bus #5 that now runs on Sundays, it is easy to get to Cimiez by bus.
Don’t forget that May 1st is Labor Day in Europe, so there are no buses and the museums are closed, so on that day just take an Uber!
